CV
Shihab Uddin Mian (she-hub oud-deen me-in, he/him) is a Bengali-Canadian creative technologist working primarily with visual media and creative coding. He is intrigued by the emotional dimensions of technology and how they shape human connection in our increasingly networked world. With a particular interest in how technology informs our psychological affect, he theorizes that creative expression through technology can strengthen tethers between people. Through his practice, Shihab deconstructs the transformation, distortion and disfigurement of humanity’s relationship to technology in the face of rapid advancement.
Shihab creates deprecated programs and intentional failings, where inefficiency, glitch, or error are embraced as part of the creative process. His view is that the dull-edge of technology is a much more human centric position to view advancement. This dedication to the dull-edge allows Shihab to foster a sense of shared experience in his audiences—one rooted in embedding a very human beauty into our technology through fallibility and imperfection.
Based in Tkaronto, Canada, Shihab holds a BFA in New Media from Toronto Metropolitan University. He has exhibited works locally and at the Art Gallery of Guelph, InterAccess, Northern Contemporary Gallery, Gallery 1313, Tranzac Club, and internationally in the Netherlands. Shihab has participated in residencies at Music Gallery, Gibraltar Point for the Arts, & Heckhole Studios.
